Leipzig will host the next Jose Carreras Gala to fight against leukemia.


Berlin, Dec 2 (AFP) .- Famous Spanish tenor Jose Carreras, accompanied bymusicians, athletes, actors and dancers, will offer a Charity Gala in theaid against leukemia, on the next 18th of December, in the German city of Leipzig. At a news conference, the organizers reported today that among the prominentwho have confirmed their attendance and will go up on stage during the "José Carreras Gala" there is the musician and Irish pop singer Chris de Burgh,the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, the German musician Peter Maffayand the violinist and orchestra Dutch conducter, Andre Rieu.Thanks to a bone marrow transplant Jose Carreras was able, in his own words,"to overcome the dangerous disease." In 1987, when at the peak of his career, he was diagnosed with leukemia anddoctors gave him very little hope of surviving and in 1988 he establishedthe Jose Carreras International Foundation for the fight against leukemia." This foundation, based in Barcelona, financially supports the researchagainst this disease and maintains a bank of donor bone marrow. "I know, from my own my experience, that the fight against leukemia needthree things: the best medical treatment possible, support from friends andfamily, and to strongly believe that you will be healthy again," saidCarreras. During the 13 past galas the fund raising achieved an amount of 74.2million euros that benefited the German branch of the Jose CarrerasFoundation for the fight against leukemia. This branch was founded in1995, with headquarters in Munich. The José Carreras gala will take two and a half hours' and will also countwith the participation of family members of patients suffering fromleukemia. "The Jose Carreras Gala is much more than a show for television, it is anexample of humanity," said Axel Bulthaupt today. Axel Bulthaupt will bepresenting the Gala.

VIENNA IS one of the great centres of European classical music and opera and home to one of Europe’s finest Christmas markets.
As such it’s highly appropriate that at this time of year a touch of the Austrian capital should come to Galway for a night of music and song in the lead up to Christmas. A Viennese Christmas takes place at the Town Hall Theatre on Sunday December 21 at 8pm. There are only a few tickets left for this performance. However a matinee will take place at 4pm on Sunday 21 so get your tickets now.
The show will feature the award winning tenor Seán Costello; soprano Celine Byrne, winner of the Maria Callas Grand Prix 2007; Jose Carreras; and internationally acclaimed violinist Vladimir Jablokov; and the Slovak Festival Ensemble.
