Buona settimana a tutti!!!

Key facts:

◦ Welcome to another Video of the Week.
This week opened and closed with two events involving Josep Carreras: the fisrt one, the ceremony at the University of the Saarland, and the second one, the concert at the Pavellão Atlántico in Lisbon that took place last night (will write a review as soon as there is enough material available).
◦ One of the most interesting moments of Monda's ceremony was the comparison between Schiller's and Verdi's character of Don Carlos, that Carreras interpretated for the first time in Salzburg in 1976. It has been broadcasteed a video of the first scene in which Carlo appear, that is the aria "Io l'ho perduta... io la vidi e il suo sorriso". A fiend of mine who attended the cerimony, as I have already told you, emphasised the fact of watching again that very scene from the Auditorium of the University with Josep Carreras in that very room. As I didn't live that moment, I can just use my immagination, watching again the video. I hadn't seen this opera for quite long time, but I personally thing that it includes many of the best musical moments ever composed by Verdi, and not only by Verdi.: particularly, I've always loved the "friendship duet" that Carreras sang with the legendary baritone Piero Cappuccilli, "Dio che nell'alma infondere".
◦ Watching again that first scene in which Carlo appears, I have had a sensation of sublime, a power that leaves me with no defence, and that leaves me hanged to each note, each word, each peculiarity. This happens with Josep Carreras: you can find out something new at the 1000th listening as if it was the first one.
Through this aria, Don Carlos denounces the fact that he has been deprived of the lady he loves, Elisabetta di Vaois, who is now married to his father, the King Filippo II. He also reminds the dear moments he spent with Elisabetta in France. Moreover, Carlos was loved back by the Queen. In this music we can find both desperation and tenderness brought by the memory of a love full of hope, a love stolen by his father, the King. Let's the video say the rest... enjoy it!!
◦ The title of the post alludes to a surprise. Today June 17th, we celebrate the 4th anniversary of the unforgettable recital at the Gran Teatre del Liceu for the 50th anniversary of his first performance as a child. Even though I couldn't attend it, this recital is linked with dear memories to me. How could we celebrate it now? No reasonable choice is possible, but only an emotive one... with a brief, intense moment showing the whole audience captivated by the great tenor: never ending ovations both at the Liceu and at the Sant Sebastià's beach at La Barceloneta.
Hope you have appreciated today's proposal. See you next Sunday for another video!! Have you all a nice week!!
