"Il Video della Settimana": Josep Carreras' debut as Sly in the Zürich Opera House (May, 1998)

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:
◦ Welcome to another Video of the Week. First of all, I apologise for not publishing it yesterday, but unexpected complications made it impossible. Today, Monday July 2, Josep Carreras will offer a charity recital at the Zürich Opera House, where he's been protagonist of several successful performances. One of these is his debut as Sly, an opera from Ermanno Wold Ferrari that he was to sing at least 10 years before, but leukemia did not make it possible. Besides Carreras, the cast counts on other big names such as Juan Pons as Westmoreland, Daniela Dessì as Dolly, and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos.
◦ As I said, I know this opera and have already talked about it in this blog, more than three years ago (you can read the post here), because I do have the CD and I had watched the video of one of the Liceu performances during the re-opening season 1999/2000, after the tragic fire that destroyed the theatre completely in 1994. I fell in love with this opera, and this very role from the very beginning, even though it was far from being similar to the typical characters embodying the romantic hero, which Carreras had built his repertoire on. Sly is a loser, a poor man, and Carreras expressed both the comic and the tragic aspects in a way that is simply extraordinary. It is an opera that requires an incredible ability in interpretation, probably more than some others, and that imposes the singer to be a very good actor too. All qualities Carreras has always been an example of.
◦ Time ago I watched a documentary about his debut as Sly at the Opernhaus Zürich, and it particularly impressed me. If the performances in Barcelona made me fall in love with it, this one in Zürich has bewitched me. With his voice in particularly good conditions, Carreras definitely can be consider Sly per antonomasia also for his perfect mimic and his efforts in the movements characterising the role. Everytime I'm captured due to such a wonderful interpretation. In this video I've collected three of the main moments of this opera: his coming on stage at the beginning, the famous aria "Un orso in musoliera", and the monologue of the third act. Simply extraordinary!! Enjoy it, and think that Josep will perform there once again in a few hours with his pianist Lorenzo Bavaj!! I hope you've appreciated my proposal of today. See you next Sunday for another video!! Wish you all a nice week!!
