"Il Video della Settimana": A short fragment of Josep Carreras' comeback recital in Barcelona that took place 24 years ago yesterday

Buona settimana a tutti!!

Key facts:

◦ Welcome to another Video of the Week. This week, after the successful concert in Lebanon, deals with two special anniversaries: the former, the birthday of Josep Carreras' beloved daughter, Júlia, whom I wish a very happy birthday with all my heart; the latter, the 24th anniversary of the legendary recital at the Triumph Arc in Barcelona, that one we all have heard about, his joyful comeback in front of his people after his hard battle against leukemia. I have dedicated several lines to this event from the very beginning and in various ways. Though, it's such a pity that only few images are available, that's why I positively envy those who have the complete video, and even more those who experienced it... but I could nothing for it: I was born two months later.
◦ From the very first moment I heard about it, I searched anything on the web, and the first video I found was the one I would like to propose you today. It's a fragment of the TV3 newscast of July 22nd, 1988. It's not so much, but makes you understand and perceive such incredible atmosphere, such emotion involving both Josep and the audience, something simply you can't describe with words. You could perceive such tremendous happiness of a man who had miraculously won against a terrible desease that didn't leave so much hope at that time, and such joy of those who had always loved him, and that have been able to discover the man behind the great artist, the human fragility behind the idol, one who had always kept the catalan flag flying around the world. Thinking of it I always shiver when I cross the Triumph Arc in Barcelona.
◦ This TV3 video is commented in catalan, and makes reference to the presence of Her Majesty, Queen Sofía, together with the other authorities, the President of the Catalan Government Jordi Pujol, and the Major of Barcelona Pasqual Maragall. Júlia, who had just turned 10, offered the Queen a bouquet. The crowd was made of 100.000 people who welcomed the great tenor coming on stage with a never ending warm ovation, before he, who was so thrilled, greeted and thanked them. Josep Carreras, performing with the pianist Vincenzo Scalera, chose himself a program composed by extremely meaningful songs: it has been fully understood from the very first piece, T'Estimo... dedicated to his people, to the last one, Nessun Dorma, performed in a moment in which one can't be more a winner, passing through L'Emigrant, a catalan song about the nostalgy due to staying far from one's homeland, even more aching when it says "Estic malalt" (I'm sick), and through that most joyful night of El cant dels ocells. The happiest night of his life, as Josep stated after the recital when he felt the happiest man on earth for several reasons he didn't need to list. Grand finale with the unexpected surprise of Montserrat Caballé who brought him a heart made of roses on the stage. They were to sing together the Brindis from La Traviata.
◦ I know it's just a short video, but I think it's enough to feel the unique emotive dimension of that night in Barcelona, on July 21, 1988. Enjoy it!!
Hope (I'm sure of it) that you have appreciated my proposal of today, dedicated also to Júlia because of her birthday. See you next Sunday for a new video. Wish you all a nice week!!
