Josep Carreras performed with a prestigious recital at the Opernhaus Zürich

Grazie a tutte!!

BRAVI JOSEP E LORENZO!!

Key facts:

◦ We could well imagine that Josep Carreras' benefit recital at the Opernhaus Zürich that took place last Monday evening would turn into a huge success, as it was to be one of the top events this year. But when we read the program, we understood that this was reality. It was a recital in which Josep Carreras was to be the only singer performing together with his italian pianist, Lorenzo Bavaj. That's pointless to say: fans prefer concerts in which he sings alone. With all my respect for his partners, I perfectly understand it. I would like to thank with advance the friends of mine, Eva included, who had the privilege to attend this recital and than wanted to inform me about some details that are fundamental in this post. Thank you all!!
◦ Happy and at ease, Carreras arrived on the stage of a crowded Zurich Opera House together with Lorenzo Bavaj, to receive his first huge ovation, well deserved. I have mentioned before the absolute beauty of the program, the typical recital repertoire that is less frequent lately, and that proposed at the very beginning Stradella's Pietà Signore, one of the pieces Josep Carreras set the standard, with those soft voice passages to emphasise his supplication to the Lord. Lu Cardillo and a couple of Bellini's songs followed, Dolente Immagine and Malinconia, ninfa gentile. The atmosphere was already warm when Carreras left his pianist alone to perform Rossini's Valse Lugubre with piano. After coming back, he offered a sequence of three songs by Francesco Paolo Tosti, Malìa, Segreto and L'Ultima Canzone, and vrought the first part to end with two more songs by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Chanson des yeux and Sérénade Napolitane.
◦ Before the concert to continue, Karl Friedrich Scheufele from Chopard handed over a cheque with the amount of 250.000 CHF as a donation to the German José Carreas Leukemia Foundation, thanking him, as a joke, for this farewell concert for Mr. Pereira, who was on the stage with them. Alexander Pereira and Mr. Scheufele associated Carreras and Bavaj to Spain and Italy who played the final match of the Football European Championship. Then Mr.Scheufele asked Carreras if he wanted to say something, but the tenor preferred to keep on with the concert "before Mr. Pereira wants to sing". With a lovely auto-irony, Pereira took part to this joke, and reply that Carreras knew perfectly how bad he could sing.
◦ The recital continued with the sencond part in which the tenor proposed several songs in spanish, such as Canción al árbol del olvido, La rosa y el sauce, Del Cabello más sutil and the wonderdul Íntima by Tata Nacho. Such spanish sequence have been interrupted by the second performance by Lorenzo Bavay who played Milonga del Ángel by Piazzolla, a composer he chose also for his last performance, Muerte del Ángel, and by the famous catalan song L'Oreneta. Afther this very song, Carreras proudly showed his little catalan flag from the pocket and some eastern fans replied with their, much bigger, catalan flag and he smiled. The program came back to Italy for the last songs of such wonderful recital that touched the heart of the audience sitting in the hall: 'E rrose e tu by Furio Rendine, a song he never sang before but that the audience appreciated so much that, after the concert, he had to promise that he would sing it again in the future; this three neapolitan song sequence was completed by Passione and Vurria.
◦ In front of such an irrepressible enthusiasm of the audience who answered to Carreras' great artistry with thunderous ovations, the tenor could not but offer four encores more: Core 'ngrato, even more intimate in the recital version, Anema e core, Dicitencello Vuje, and Un'Ombra from the Warsaw Concerto. Now you can well understand what I said at the beginning of the post: such a program, performed by Josep Carreras and Lorenzo Bavaj, with such a chemistry between each other, in such a prestigious stage like the Opernhaus Zúrich, can't but guarantee an extraordinary success. Lucky those who attended it, soprano Isabel Rey included, and came out from the theatre still touched with emotions.
