"No matter how small your possibility is: fight!!": Josep Carreras and his personal fight against leukemia
Credo sia un buon momento per pubblicare un'intervista uscita circa a inizio settembre in cui Josep Carreras parla molto apertamente della sua battaglia personale contro la leucemia, in particolare in seguito al recital benefico che il tenore ha offerto martedì 18 Settembre, presso la Benaroya Hall a Seattle, la stessa città che gli aveva restituito la vita. Come già sapete, si è trattato di un recital commemorativo del 25esimo anniversario della sua vittoria contro la malattia, e del novantesimo compleanno di Dottie Thomas, moglie del Premio Nobel per la Medicina, Dr. Edward Donnall Thomas, pioniere del trattamento allora sperimentale cui era stato sottoposto Josep Carreras. Cinquecento invitati si sono uniti alla grande celebrazione donando una somma di $250 pro capite destinata all'Institut de Recerca Josep Carreras presto attivo in Catalogna e il Fred Hutchinson. L'evento è stato sponsorizzato dalla Bianco's Company, che si occupa di nuove terapie contro il cancro.
In merito al recital non ci sono notizie dirette, solo la testimonianza del Dr. James Bianco, che nel 1987 era un giovane medico del Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center di Seattle, pubblicata nel blog di Mike Flynn & Associates. Il Dr. Blanco, ora fondatore principale della Cell Therapeutics (CTI), racconta del suo primo incontro con Carreras in qualità di suo medico, nonostante avesse già avuto modo di vederlo personalmente in scena con Carmen al MET di New York.
Nell'articolo, il Dr. Bianco ha condiviso qualche dettaglio delle condizioni di Carreras: la rarità della sua forma di leucemia, all'epoca fatale nella quasi totalità dei casi, richiedeva la più potente dose di radiazioni e di chemioterapia di cui il Centro di Seattle potesse avere memoria. Con il timore che il suo corpo non reggesse quantità tanto massicce, il tenore ha trascorso più di 60 giorni in una camera sterile che ha abbandonato il 23 Dicembre, quando era stato ritenuto in condizioni sufficienti per trascorrere in Natale in un appartamento insieme alla sua famiglia.
Una volta stabilita la Fondazione, Josep Carreras ha invitato il Dr. Bianco a farne parte in qualità di membro. Accanto alla sua partecipazione attiva, Bianco ha fondato il CTI e Carreras, nel nome dell'amicizia che li lega, ha inviato un video di congratulazioni per il 20esimo anniversario.
Questo articolo ci permette di avere un'idea della precarietà delle condizioni in cui era allora il nostro tenore, e di quanta determinazione fosse caratterizzata la sua lotta verso la guarigione. Affronta questo discorso nell'intevista cui facevo riferimento nelle prime righe del post, rilasciata i primi d'agosto a Mallorca, in occasione del primo José Carreras International Yacht Race.

Secondo Josep Carreras, un'esperienza di questo tipo ti segna irrimediabilmente, e una volta superato il cancro probabilmente si torna a stare sufficientemente bene da inciampare in alcuni degli errori commessi in precedenza, ma ciò non toglie che la malattia ti porta ad essere più umile e a nutrire una certa gratitudine nei confronti della vita.
L'argomento si sposta sul José Carreras Gala annuale che tiene in Germania e che probabilmente troverà in questo 13 Dicembre 2012 la sua ultima edizione con MDR. In questi 17 anni la generosità ed il sostegno del pubblico tedesco sono stati meravigliosi. La gente crede nella causa della Fondazione, riassunta nel motto "affinché la leucemia sia un giorno curabile per tutti ed in ogni caso": lavorando sempre in maniera trasparente, la Fondazione in questi anni ha finanziato più di 900 progetti, ed ogni anno un gruppo di esperti ne esamina di nuovi che vengono sottoposti per stabilire quali siano più meritevoli di supporto. Tutto quello che per ora è dato sapere è che con questa edizione si prevede di raggiungere l'obiettivo dei 100 milioni di euro complessivi, ed in merito al futuro si sta discutendo per un nuovo formato anche con MDR.
Josep Carreras spende qualche parola per la sua infanzia, per raccontare brevemente come è la sua passione per la musica, nello specifico per il canto, e quella forse meno nota per la fotografia: sua madre sapeva che la carriera di cantante non sarebbe stata affatto facile, per questo lo aveva spronato a imparare qualcos'altro di "utile", da qui deriva la sua esperienza in un laboratorio che produceva carta da parati (spero di aver compreso bene dal tedesco), e la sua immatricolazione presso la Facoltà di Chimica. Tuttavia non sarebbe tardato ad arrivare il momento di scegliere tra il canto e la chimica: una scelta che non rimpiange assolutamente, consapevole del fatto che sarebbe stato un pessimo farmacista.
All'epoca la fotografia era qualcosa di speciale, oggi giorno in vece tutto viene fotografato costantemente con il telefonino, l'iPad. Ultimamente Josep Carreras fotografa solo i suoi quattro nipoti che sono la sua più grande passione. Il più piccolino ha due anni ed è particolarmente vivace. Un'altra grande passione è la lettura, senza dimenticare il calcio che più che un hobby è quasi una religione: quando si trova in città, infatti, frequenta lo stadio il più possibile. Era contento della vittoria della Spagna al Campionato Europeo, ma da catalano quale è, e con tutto il rispetto per la Nazionale Spagnola, spera un giorno di poter disporre di quella catalana, come succede nel Regno Unito di Gran Bretagna con il Galles e la Scozia.

In 1987, James Bianco was a young physician in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and now he's the main founder of the Cell Therapeutics (CTI): he has shared the memory of his first encounter with Josep Carreras as his doctor, even though he had already seen him on stage with Carmen at the MET in New York.
In the article, Dr. Bianco shared some detailes of Carreras'severe conditions: according to him, his leukemia was usually uniformly fatal in adults, so he would receive the highest amount of total body irradiation and chemo that the center ever used. Bianco explained also that there was concern over whether Carerras’ body would be so damaged by the extreme radiation that his stored bone marrow wouldn’t be able to regrow and make normal blood cells. That's a reason why he was put in an ultra-clean bubble environment where he spent approximately 60 days until his bone marrow recovered normal blood cell-making ability and was infection free. He left the isolation room on December 23rd, to spend Christmas with his brother and sister in their appartment.
Once he established his Leukemia Foundation, Josep Carreras invited Dr. Bianco to take part into it as a member. Besides it, Bianco founded CTI and Josep Carreras congratulated him for the CTI's 20 anniversary through a video.

He talks about it in the intervew I emntioned at the beginning of the post: it took place in Mallorca, on occasion of the first Josàe Carreras International Yacht Race.
After receiving the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in July 1987, probably he could not imagine to be here to talk about it 25 years later. But to be still here means to be able to help people, and this makes him so happy. As I said, a great amount of determination was necessary to undertake all the treatments his case required: "it does not matter how small your possibility to recover is: fight!!", that's what he said. Even thought you have just one possibility in a million, you have to believe in it as much as you can, and fight for it. Certainly, there are various factors together: a positive attitude is important, together with the support and love of your family, and luck, and some help from above. Carreras knows he had a guardian angel at his side.
According to him, such experience changes you: after overcoming cancer, probably you get well enough and repeat the same mistakes you made before, but certainly the disease makes you much more humble and grateful towards life.
◦ The topic is now his annual Gala in Germany. This one to take place next December 13th should be the last one in MDR. Throughout these 17 years, generosity and support from german people were fantastic. People believe in the cause of his Foundation that we can sum up in the following motto "for Leukemia to be one day a curable disease always and in any case": by working always in a transparent way, the Fundation has supported 900 projects, and every year an equipe of experts analyses new ones in order to choose the most deserving. All what now we know is that this year the score of the Gala will be 100 million Euros as a total amount of 17th editions. As regards the future they are discussing about a new format.
◦ After that Josep Carreras dedicated some words to his childhood, to tell how his passion for music and for singing was born, and to his less known passion for photograph: his mother had told him that it might have been not easy with singing, so he suggested him to learn "useful things" too, that's why he worked in a wallpaper lab for a period, and then decided to study Chemistry at the University. Soon he had to decide between Chemistry and singing: he knew that he would have been a miserable pharmacist.
At that time a photo was something really special, while nowadays we are costantly taking photos with mobiles, iPads and all that. Currently Josep Carreras takes photos only to his four grandchildren, that are his greatest passion. The youngest is 2, and he's said to be extremely lively: he said laughing "he's not a devil, he is THE DEVIL". Another great passion is reading, but we must not forget football that, it's almost a religion. When he is in Barcelona he goes regularly to the stadium to support his team, FC Barcelona. He said to be happy for Spain to have won the European Cup, but being catalan, and with all due respect towards Spain, he would like to support a catalan national team, just like Wales and Scotland have one in the UK.
