Josep Carreras interviewed by El País for the 25th anniversary of his Foundation for the fight against leukaemia

Key facts:

Yesterday, renowned Spanish newspaper El País published an interview with Josep Carreras on occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation: the meeting took place in a place in Empordà, near Girona, not far from the summer residence of our tenor. It is a very interesting interview, almost more like a conversation in which the reporter took part more actively than expected, making no secret of his points of view, not always similar to those of the artist interviewed. However, my impression should not be interpreted negatively: it is undoubtedly an interview a little different, with several interesting points that I would like to point out for you.

Recently anothe interview has been published by azureazure: read it in Spanish and in English.

The topics are related to both professional and artistic aspects, but also to personal ones, particularly his battle against leukaemia and the creation of his Foundation.
As for the leukaemia experience, Josep Carreras began commenting that, perhaps, in the end it came for a good purpose, as the Foundation proved to be a very important human stimulus that enriched and rewarded him. On the other hand, there was he stimulous of the stage, that of the romantic hero who anyway ceased to exist once he left cloak and dagger in the dressing room. Thus, his life was thus a synthesis of these two stimulus, as it is easier to a well known artist the mission to raise awareness of a cause such as leukaemia. Before it acquired a public and collective dimension, however, his fight against the disease was personal and it was extremely hard: after some months he spent alone in the sterile room, he needed to rebuild his mental strength and was lucky enough to make it, despite the deteriorating condition one lives without hair, nails and eyebrows. He lived it as a transition which he had to pass through, always trusting in the fact that he would come out and would be singing back again: of course, such kind of experience certainly influences the way you see life, despite once you are healthy again, you often make the same mistakes as before, the same ones that you had promised to avoid.
Among the biggest mistakes he thinks he made, Carreras mentioned his hurry at singing some operas, and then focused on his admiration towards younger patients, children who give themselves courage to their parents, and that mature suddenly in an extraordinary way .
He also said that he was not bothered for his name to be associated half with the word oepra and half to leukemia: indeed, having been lucky enough to win his battle, he wanted to pay back science and society for the affection he received, by creating the Foundation.
In this regard, he was asked to tell about the anecdote related to Felipe González, whom the tenor had addressed to, in order to obtain financial support for his Foundation: the former president had told him "you do the nice speech and then I paso el cazo", and helped him to get 800 million pesetas in a dinner with bankers and public and private enterprises.
Currently, the Foundation receives funding from approximately 40,000 members, from enterprises, and from charity concert and recitals Carreras offers all over the world: in spite of the hard times we live in, the results were good enough to allow the creation of the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute which consists of two campuses in the cities of Barcelona and Badalona. So important achievements will be possible, because research is absolutely essential: any initiative promoting research si fundamental, now more than ever, as the contribution of the private compensates where even the richest governments fail to arrive .

Much of the interview was dedicated to the professional side too: Carreras was defined by the journalist as "the less tenor of the Three Tenors", in an absolutely positive sense, and meant to describe an artist who is not a divo, and who was not so much in sync with the new era: he referred to nowadays exposure, to a new generation that sometimes shows weak against aggression of their time, careers that suddenly stop, and artists who are struggling to be fulfilled.
In his time, Josep Carreras devoted himself entirely to his passion, to singing, with no stop: it was not just his job, but he was so pleased to do it: however, over time it has proved indispensable to learn to say no, sometimes, both in professional and in the private life. His desire not to disappoint the expectations of people is perhaps due to his origins as a humble boy who saw his dream come true: his generation felt the urge to get out of a social stratum , to achieve what that was not possible before due to circumstances such as the Spanish Civil War and all the factors related to it: the formula to get it was talent and determination.
Recalling his childhood, Josep mentioned his parents, his maternal grandfather who was an amateur baritone, the way his family has always trusted him and his abilities, allowing him to study music as soon as he showed a marked instinct for singing: Josep, who was already sure to become an opera singer after havinh watched the movie El Gran Caruso, attended a performance of La Traviata at the Liceu starring Renata Tebaldi with his father dressed in uniform. Despite they absolutely did not want it to become a child prodigy, his parents allowed him to make his debut in the same opera house in El Retablo of Maese Pedro, in January 1958, conducted by José Iturbi. Unfortunately, his mother, the motor of his family, could not experience what was his real debut, that was in Lucrezia Borgia with Montserrat Caballé in 1970, as died at only 51 years for cancer .
In his career, Carreras has collected collaborations with the greatest conductors such as Karajan, Abbado, Giulini, Muti and Kleiber: what was different than today was the preparation process which consisted of many hours of rehearsals: a seriousness that today seems to be partly lost. If today what has great preponderance is the stage direction, for the needs of spectacularity and exposure through the media, at the time the dominant role was that of the conductor, and the according to Carreras, Karajan perfectly carried out this function: not only he reigned in Vienna and Salzburg, but was a real pioneer along with Leonard Bernstein; austere and unattainable for someone, actually Karajan always showed affection towards Josep Carreras, which he always returned him with great esteem.
If opera is a genre that has always been able to adapt to times, passing from the era of castrati up to that of stage directors, reinventing itself at every opportunity by offering always different scenes and productions, even the singer's voice is subjected to a evolutionary process the repertoire must take into account: if leukemia had not burst in, and his physical form had not been affected, probably his voice would have followed the natural course. Aged 40, when he was diagnosed with leukaemia, Carreras had already sung almost everything he wanted: however, he made debuts in other operas, but the artist must necessarily consider his limitations .
The tenor has subsequently emphasized on how emotions are authentic and how you experience them  intensely on the stage: he explained how the artist who interprets a character lives like as suspended in a limbo, his feeling are those of his character despite the brain intervenes giving strict orders that are executed automatically. According to him, the inspiration is to give the character what one considers he should give him, colors, dynamics, emotions: the music acquires an extraordinary power, so much that it is difficult but essential to keep control. Emotions are actually what generate singing, from the soul: but everything depends on the instrument, that one day offers many advantages and the other limitations. Carreras believes that he actually gave his best in no more than 10 % of cases, then there is a 60/70 % very positive, and finally a 20% where you are forced to be defensive, to resort to the tactics of the catenaccio as Inter of Milan does. In addition, vocal cords, are affected by many external factors too.
Nietzsche said that singing comes from happiness: Carreras said he does not totally agree with the German philosopher, but he stated that he certainly feels fulfilled when he sings . The nostalgia of the wonderful moments , according to him, is not to be conceived solely as a burden, but as a joy, like being back to life: what does not arouse nostalgia are bad memories, not everything is forever. Those who have fulfilled feel fine.
