Josep Carreras: an unforgettable experience for the audience in Tianjin

FELICITATS, JOSEP!!
BRAVI TUTTI

ENGLISH

A great concert yesterday in Tianjin, the Chinese city which a very excited Josep Carreras visited now for the first time, attracted also by its rapid cultural growth.
Over 1700 people, eager to see and listen to this legend live, crowded into the hall of the Tianjin Grand Theatre, which hosted his concert entitled "Hello Tianjin", during which he was joined by Spanish soprano Sabina Puértolas and Maestro David Giménez, who conducted the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra.
The pieces in the program repeatedly interchanged with high doses of enthusiasm from a totally conquered and probably also surprised audience, as they could find such velvety and seductive timbre even at this point of his career. Josep Carreras is now a veteran, he masterly relies on his experience, interpretative sensibility and elegance of style, elements that guarantee his success and reconfirm his being a living legend.
After a warm welcome, the tenor chose to sing La Serenata, Era de Maggio, Rosó (Pel teu amor), and The Impossible Dream in the first part of the official program, to continue than with Lejana Tierra Mía, Passione, Vurria and the overwhelming Core 'ngrato.
Great appreciation for Sabina Puértolas too, who has sometimes sung along with him these years in some concerts in different parts of the world and, above all, she is part of the cast of El Juez (Los niños perdidos), the work by Christian Kolonovits which has brought Carreras back the opera stage after several years of absence.
The Spanish soprano enchanted with some classic works like Je veux vivre from Romeo and Juliet, Mercè, dilette amiche from I Vespri Siciliani, Les filles de Cadix and Me llaman the primorosa (?) from the zarzuela El Barbero de Sevilla. She also joined the great maestro in various duets, such as Je te veux by Satie and Dúo y Jota from La Africana. For sure, the audience must have enjoyed a lot of the latter... as they always perform it beautifully.
The Tianjin Symphony Orchestra proved up to the task as well, even though they had only one day to rehearse together with the singers: under Maestro Giménez' s baton, they were absolute protagonists three times by playing the Farandole from Bizet's Arlesienne Suite, the intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana and the one from Jiménez's La Boda de Luis Alonso.
Among the several encores, in addition to the final Brindisi from La Traviata, what deserves a special mention is Josep Carreras' own tribute to the audience with a Chinese popular song titled A Place far, far away which was followed by waves of applause.

Special thanks to Yanan Zou for her kind courtesy of some photos.
