Josep Carreras offered a very emotional Birthday concert in Aalborg

Ne andrò lontana da La Wally, Les Filles de Cadix, e ancora la poesia britannica In the Bleak Midwinter e la più celebre Joy to the World.

ENGLISH

On 5 December, Josep Carreras had a very special Birthday celebration, during which he offered a wonderful concert in the Danish city of Aalborg. On the stage of the Musikkens Hus, the House of Music, he was joined by soprano Celine Byrne and Maestro David Giménez, who conducted the Symphony Orchestra of Aalborg, together with the Coro Misto and the Choir of the Aalborg Philarmonic.
At 20 days to Christmas, Josep Carreras colored the usual repertoire of his concerts with some of the more traditional and appreciated tunes of what is popularly regarded as the most wonderful time of the year.

Enhanced by the excellent acoustics of the hall, his classics Era de Maggio, T'estimo, Passione and Vurria he sang in the first part, then made room to another kind of classics, such as Adeste Fideles, Mille Cherubini in Coro or White Christmas. And Suddenly, it was Christmas thanks also to the duets The Little Drummer Boy and Cantique de Noël, which followed the zarzuela of the first part, Dúo y Jota from La Africana. In a very good shape, Josep Carreras gave way to one of the young colleague of his that his loyal audience appreciate most: the talented Irish soprano Celine Byrne sang on her own Ebben? I will go away from La Wally, Les Filles de Cadix, and after that the British poem In the Bleak Midwinter and the more popular Joy to the World. The Choir, who performed individually in a Christmas medley, proved essential in making the atmosphere even more suggestive.
And when the magic could not be more real, the choir, the orchestra and the entire audience in the hall dedicated 'Happy Birthday' to Josep Carreras, visibly touched by such lovely gesture. Indeed, the emotion was very much alive for everyone there, even for us who watched that moment only through a video shared by Musikkens Hus on Facebook. Sometimes there is nothing more emotional  than simple things.
The orchestra chose to perform the Overture from Die Fladermaus, the Intermezzo from La Boda de Luis Alonso and the medley along with the choir.

The encores followed the same mixed nature of the official program: Carreras began with another carol he seems to particularly love, I'll be home for Christmas, while Celine Byrne chose fun with Let it Snow !. Then, both artists sang together Non ti scordar di me, a very emotional Silent Night and, in conclusion, the Brindisi from La Traviata. In facts, there is no birthday party without a toast.
In the video you will find short excerpts of the concert with others taken from an interview Josep granted after the concert: he said he had already been a couple of times in Aalborg, and that take the opportunity of this new hall to be back to sing there. By the way, he plans to perform again in Denmark in the near future. He also shared his emotion because of the Birthday surprise he received, and finally said that, once his career is over, he will entirely devote his life to his family and his foundation.
